Lamin-x protective film

Clear film for the parts of a car that take the hits: headlights, fog lights, the front of the hood, door edges and the windshield. Cut to fit your vehicle and put on here in the shop.

What it is

A layer the road wears out instead of your car.

Lamin-x makes protective film in Georgia, and has done since 2002. The film goes on over a lens or a painted panel and takes the stones, sand, bug acid and scuffs that would otherwise land on the part itself. When it has done its job for years, the film can come off and the part underneath is still the one that left the factory.

Most of it is precut for the exact year, make and model, so it fits the shape of your headlight or your hood rather than being trimmed by eye. Empire is a Lamin-x dealer and registered installer, which means we order it cut for your vehicle and fit it here.

  • Made in the USA
  • Precut kits for cars, trucks, motorcycles and side by sides
  • Clear, tinted or colored, for lights
  • Up to 10 years of manufacturer warranty, depending on the film

For the lights

Keep the headlights clear, or change how they look.

Modern headlight lenses are plastic. Stones pit them and the sun turns them yellow and hazy, and a new headlight on a late model car can cost hundreds. A clear film over the lens takes that wear instead. Lamin-x also makes the same film in tints and colors, for people who want the look as well as the protection.

01

Clear

Invisible protection for headlights, fog lights, tail lights, markers and LED light bars. On a daily driver, this is the one we would put on the headlights.

02

Tinted

Four shades, lightest to darkest: Tint, Gunsmoke, Smoked and Charcoal. Gunsmoke is the usual choice on tail lights. The darker shades cut a lot of light, so they are for tail lights and markers, not the lights you drive by.

03

Colored

Yellow, amber, blue, red, pink and green. Yellow fog lights are the classic, and yellow on the headlight of a cafe racer.

Worth knowing: Lamin-x sells its colored films for off-road use, and says some of them are not legal on a vehicle's main lights on public roads. We will tell you what we know when you come in, but whether a color is legal on the road is the owner's call.

For the paint

Ricochet paint protection film, cut for your car.

Lamin-x's paint protection kits are made from its Ricochet film, a clear film with a self-healing, high gloss top coat that sheds water and resists stains. Each piece is cut for one spot on one model, so it goes where your car actually gets damaged.

  • Full and partial clear bras
  • Hood leading edge bug guards
  • Door edge guards
  • Door handle cups
  • Rear bumper and trunk lip
  • Rocker panels and wheel arches
  • A pillars and cab top
  • Fuel doors and door sills
  • Truck bed rails
  • Under roof racks

On a motorcycle, the same film comes as tank guards, Harley side bag guards and full paint protection kits. Ask about your bike.

For the glass

A windshield film, so a stone costs a film and not a windshield.

Ricochet windshield film is an optically clear polyurethane that sits over the glass and helps soak up the hit from road debris. A windshield on a newer car carries cameras and sensors for the safety systems, and replacing one often means recalibrating them too. Replacing a film does not.

The warranty

Backed by Lamin-x, and claims start here.

If something goes wrong with the film, bring the car back to us first. We are the installer, so we look at it and take the claim to Lamin-x for you.

Light films: 5 years

Lamin-x covers its light films for five years from purchase against cracking, fading, yellowing and manufacturing defects, as long as you own the car and look after it.

Ricochet paint film: 10 years

Lamin-x covers Ricochet paint protection film for ten years against manufacturing defects.

What it does not cover

Normal wear, abuse, and damage from outside the film, like a collision. An approved claim gets you replacement film from Lamin-x. The warranty stays with the original owner and does not pass to the next one.

Questions people ask

The ones that come up at the counter.

Anything not covered here, ring the shop or ask at the estimate.

Will I be able to see it?

Clear film is made to disappear. On a headlight most people cannot tell it is there unless they know to look. Tinted and colored films are meant to be seen.

Will my headlights be dimmer?

Clear film is made to let the light through. Tints are a different matter: Lamin-x rates its four shades at roughly 40%, 60%, 65% and 75% less light, lightest to darkest. That is why the dark shades belong on tail lights and markers, not on the lights you drive by.

Can it come off later?

Yes. Warmed up and peeled slowly, the film comes off without hurting the lens, and any adhesive left behind cleans off. So if you tint the tail lights and change your mind, the factory lights are still under there.

What about bubbles or haze right after it goes on?

Film goes on wet, and a little haze or the odd small bubble is normal while it cures. Most of it clears by itself. If something is still there after that, bring it back and we will sort it.

What if there is no kit for my vehicle?

Lamin-x has precut kits for a very long list of models, but not every one. Where there is no precut kit, we fit it from a sheet and trim it to the shape by hand, which is how a lot of professional installs are done anyway.

I can buy this online. Why have a shop fit it?

You can, and the small pieces are a fair DIY job. The large ones are not. Lamin-x itself says its full paint protection kits are best fitted by a professional, and a crease or a lifted edge on a hood is there to look at every day. We fit this kind of thing for a living.

Is this the same as the NanoPro LPF you do?

Both stop stone chips, in different ways. Lamin-x is a film that comes off a roll, cut to fit. NanoPro LPF goes on as a liquid and cures into a film, so it has no edges. Lamin-x also covers the lights and the glass, which LPF does not. We will tell you which suits your car.

What will it cost?

It depends on the vehicle and what you want covered. A pair of headlights is a small job, a full front end is a big one. Ring the shop or book an estimate, and we will give you a number on your vehicle.
